Marie Avril - Bride of Frankenstein - Original illustration
Lives of Sarah Bernhardt
In 2023, France commemorated the centenary of Sarah Bernhardt’s death.
An iconic actress and a fiercely independent woman, she is regarded as one of the most important French actresses of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Many events were organized to mark the occasion, and Achetez de l’Art joined this national tribute by presenting an exhibition of original works from Divine - Lives of Sarah Bernhardt by Marie Avril, published in February 2020 by Futuropolis.
This illustration by Marie Avril captures Sarah Bernhardt in a spectacular, almost fantastical vision.
Rendered in black and white, with striking contrasts, the artist heightens the theatricality of the figure: direct gaze, hieratic silhouette, bandaged hands, and oversized hair as if charged with the electricity of the stage. The image evokes at once the icon, the tragedienne, and the avant-garde woman, able to inhabit every role and move through every metamorphosis.
Through this intense portrait, Marie Avril pays tribute to Sarah Bernhardt’s singular aura, her audacity, and her undiminished modernity.
More than a celebrated actress, what emerges here is a free, powerful, almost unreal figure whose presence continues to fuel our imagination. A contemporary, elegant, and striking interpretation of the woman who was already known in her own time as “the Divine.”
