Princess Mononoke, Édouard Cour's Painted Tribute

Released in Japan in 1997, Princess Mononoke is one of the major films by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Set in medieval Japan, the story follows Ashitaka, who finds himself at the heart of a conflict between humans and the gods of the forest, and meets San, a young woman raised by wolves who became one of the most iconic characters in Miyazaki's body of work. Through this conflict, the film develops a complex reflection on the relationship between humanity and nature, violence, and the balance of living things.

For this illustration, Édouard Cour temporarily sets aside comics to reinterpret Miyazaki's world through an oil painting on wood. This technique allows the artist to develop particularly rich work on texture, light, and volume, while recapturing the pictorial, organic quality distinctive to the world of Princess Mononoke. The piece thus stands as a genuine personal reinterpretation of the character and her world, far from a simple reproduction of the film.

For this exhibition, we are pleased to present this original oil on wood by Édouard Cour, paying tribute to Princess Mononoke.
