O Senseï, Following the Founder of Aikido by Édouard Cour

Published in 2016 by Akileos, O Senseï tells the story of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido. After his epic reimagining of Greek mythology in Herakles, Édouard Cour turns here to the journey of the man behind a martial art built as much on physical mastery as on a genuine philosophy of peace and harmony. The album offers an inward journey through the different stages of Ueshiba's life and the birth of his discipline.

Created entirely by Édouard Cour, both the writing and the artwork, O Senseï stands out for its black-and-white treatment and its particularly contemplative staging. The artist alternates combat sequences with more meditative passages, playing with contrast, silence, and movement to visually capture the philosophy of aikido. His artwork, precise and expressive, and highly dynamic when depicting the fight scenes, gives the album a distinctive graphic identity.

For this exhibition, we are pleased to present this original page by Édouard Cour from O Senseï. A piece particularly representative of the artist's work on this album, offering a direct sense of his remarkable use of black and white, his feel for movement, and his way of turning a biographical story into a true graphic experience.
