Les Animaux malades de la peste, According to Jeanne Puchol

With Les Animaux malades de la peste, Jeanne Puchol offers a comic-book interpretation of one of Jean de La Fontaine's most famous fables. Published in 1678, this fable depicts an assembly of animals gathered by the lion to determine which of them should be held responsible for the plague. Behind the animal tale lies a particularly biting critique of arbitrariness, power, and justice rendered in favor of the strongest.

These pages by Jeanne Puchol strike a remarkably contemporary chord: the law of the strongest sacrificing the weakest resonates strangely with our own era. The depiction of the animals, lending them almost human expressions and postures, shows great mastery, as does the black-and-white inking and the clarity of the dialogue. A piece as graphically virtuosic as it is meaningful.

For this exhibition, we are pleased to present these two original pages by Jeanne Puchol, devoted to Les Animaux malades de la peste. A rare set built around a major work of French literary heritage, reinterpreted by an artist with a particularly distinctive graphic style.
