To mark the Football World Cup, Achetez de l'Art Paris presents Sports Art, an exhibition devoted to the artistic representation of sport through a dialogue between photography and illustration.

"This illustration is a study for a comic set in the world of sport, The Game, built around the LFL (Legends Football League) — a fairly brutal sport played by women — which emerged in the 2010s.

At the time I wasn't fully satisfied with my drawing level, so I started drawing frantically, non-stop, straight from video and without pencil sketches, to keep things spontaneous — mostly Sumo and Legends Football League.

I produced a handful of illustrations like this "All In," which later led to the creation of Crystal, the heroine of Last Man Stories: Soir de match (published by Casterman in 2018; the comic won the Daruma Award for Best International Manga at Japan Expo 2019).

The world of sport has always fascinated me; I practised a lot of combat sports and martial arts, notably taekwondo for 15 years. I was one of the sparring partners for the French national team at INSEP during Olympic preparation for the 2004 Games.

Loosely translated: punching bag for the champions. That's certainly where my love comes from for the underdogs, the outcasts, the born-to-lose, and the disciplines of those with scores to settle.
