The main character of Adrastée
This original India ink illustration depicts the main character of Adrastée, the famous mythological fable by Mathieu Bablet, published by Ankama.
The piece portrays this immortal king on his long initiatory and contemplative journey. Through wild landscapes inspired by Greek mythology, we find the author's signature graphic style: lush, teeming nature and vertiginous architectural ruins, magnified by remarkable work on blacks and contrasts.
Visually, Adrastée stands as a monumental work in which the artwork and composition dictate the rhythm of the narrative. Mathieu Bablet deploys an extremely meticulous style here, marked by pen-and-brush inkwork of great depth, where flat blacks and fine hatching sculpt the light. His composition rests on a masterful command of perspective and scale: the immortal king, a tiny, dwarfed silhouette, wanders through wild landscapes and titanic Hellenic architecture. By juxtaposing settings with dizzying geometric lines against organic, teeming nature, Bablet creates a striking contrast. Each board is conceived as a contemplative tableau, where the emptiness and silence of vast spaces heighten the hero's tragic solitude in the face of the immensity of the world and the gods.
