Radio Club, at the roots of Hip-Hop culture
Already featured in our gallery on the occasion of his participation in DoggyBags n°16 True Crimes, Ké Clero returns to Achetez de l’Art from March 5 to 21, 2026 for a solo exhibition dedicated to his latest release, Radio Club, published by Glénat.
Radio Club retraces the meeting and collaboration between Alex Jordanov and rapper Ice-T in the vibrant Los Angeles of the early 1980s. Driven by Ké Clero's expressive style and Alex Jordanov's intimate script, the album immerses the reader in the birth of the Radio Club, a mythical and underground place where artists, outcasts and pioneers of hip-hop culture crossed paths.
Between crime, poverty, and meteoric success, the book brings the story to life through the power of its artwork. The edgy, dynamic street scenes visually convey the social violence and raw energy of 1980s Los Angeles as seen through the eyes of two teenagers hoping to escape their circumstances. The bodies in motion and the tight framing suggest a constant tension. Their silhouettes stand out against the architecture of Los Angeles and the other cities they encounter. Clubs, nighttime streets, and urban facades bathed in incandescent sunsets create a setting firmly rooted in the 1980s.
The unique and expressive faces embody the full human diversity of this vibrant scene, several figures of which would become international stars. Thus, Ice-T's rise to fame and the perspective of a young Frenchman immersed in this changing America are not merely recounted: they are felt, each panel bringing the story to life through the rhythm of the artwork.
About Ké Clero
Having been influenced from a young age by the visual style of the Thriller music video and its special effects, he eventually turned to comics to tell his own stories. Trained in history at a school in Nantes, he developed an expressive and contemporary graphic style.
His first album, Paradis City (2017), already established his taste for stories rooted in powerful social realities. Alongside his work as an author, he alternates between tattooing, illustration, and collaborations as a screenwriter or illustrator, notably contributing to the DoggyBags series from Label 619 and publications like Métal Hurlant. With Radio Club, Ké Clero delivers an immersive work where his incisive style serves as a powerful testimony to hip-hop culture.
About Alex Jordanov
The album's writer, Alex Jordanov, is a French investigative journalist, documentary filmmaker, and essayist. He arrived in Los Angeles in the early 1980s after studying in France and completing a degree in mathematics at UCLA. With very limited resources, he immersed himself in the local culture and in 1982 opened an underground nightclub, the Radio Club, a true artistic and social laboratory where music, dance, and new urban influences intersected.
He describes hip-hop as a culture born in the Bronx but shaped by the West Coast, and emphasizes that the Radio Club was first and foremost an "underground theater," a place for artistic experimentation where the energies of an era crystallized.
