To mark the Football World Cup, Achetez de l'Art Paris presents Sports Art, an exhibition devoted to the artistic representation of sport through a dialogue between photography and illustration.

About This Photograph

This image is taken from "1.3 Billion Athletes," Elisa Haberer's major photo reportage on sport in China, shot in 2007/2008 ahead of the Beijing Olympics opening.
To explore Chinese sport and use it as a lens on a country hosting the Olympic Games for the first time, Elisa Haberer travelled across China for fourteen months. It was an ambitious, long-term project backed by L'Équipe magazine, and its publication formed the core of a special issue on August 2, 2008.

Built barely 20 years ago, the pool at the Kunming sports centre feels like it belongs to another era. Only the sound of water, amplified by a striking echo, breaks through the wall of humidity in a setting straight out of a Metropolis-style backdrop. Twice a week, children aged 4 to 10 come to defy the laws of gravity from heights that seem inversely proportional to their size.
From 5 metres up, 6-year-old Jiang Feng Xiao Wen prepares to launch into a double somersault. Does he draw his courage from the mottos displayed large on the walls? One reads: "One must make the effort that others cannot bear, to earn the honour that ordinary people cannot attain."
