About This Photograph

1948, Marcel Cerdan poses for Georges Dambier in his training gym.
An image that is at once intimate and historic.
Marcel Cerdan is just days away from achieving one of the greatest feats in French sport.
He looks pensive, almost sombre.
His hands, held forward and resting on the ropes at the photographer's request, represent both his weakness and his strength.

In the words of Georges Dambier's son, Guillaume.
"This was on the eve of Cerdan's departure for New York, where he was due to face Tony Zale for the world title (he would return victorious). Lazareff, then head of France Soir, had commissioned this portrait, insisting that it focus on his hands.
Throughout his career, the boxer had trouble with his hands, which struggled to absorb the power of his own punches. He suffered several injuries to his hands and fingers.
These recurring injuries earned him the nickname "the man with hands of clay," and all of France was anxious to know whether he had fully recovered from his previous injury.
My father was, of course, also there to capture the champion's victorious return."
