A new addition to the Label 619 roster, Anne Masse is back with Asphalte Sauvage!

In a world ravaged by a distant apocalypse, two young people with nothing in common are brought together by chance. Vlada has just lost her tribe in a terrible accident. Struggling to grieve but determined to find a new group, she sets out on the road. Pouic, a solitary nomad in search of knowledge, relies on his familiarity with the region to track down new books. Setting aside their differences, they forge a genuine friendship and try to make this devastated world their own.

Anne Masse's original pages serve this contemplative story beautifully. The pen brings a nervous energy and an immediate expressiveness to the line, while the ink wash softens the whole and spreads an almost misty atmosphere across the ravaged landscape. The touches of yellow colorex introduce visual breaking points: they draw the eye, structure the reading, and breathe a sense of light — almost of hope — into a world marked by collapse.

The page compositions rest on a precise balance between filled and empty space, alternating wide establishing shots with more intimate framings. This contrast sets the scene, then draws the reader back toward the human. There is also a masterful use of texture throughout: splatters, surface variations, controlled accidents — all contributing to the feeling of a world grown fragile.

Finally, the pacing is particularly well-judged. The images breathe, silences settle in, and certain information is deliberately kept off-panel, deepening the reader's engagement.
