Spirou and Fantasio, the Graphic Elegance of Olivier Schwartz
A key figure in contemporary Franco-Belgian comics, Olivier Schwartz is particularly known for his revival of Spirou et Fantasio, alongside writer Yann. Their first collaboration on the series, Le Groom vert-de-gris, was published by Dupuis in 2009 and plunges Spirou and Fantasio into an adventure set in occupied Belgium during the Second World War.
Schwartz's artwork belongs to a graphic tradition directly inherited from the clear line style and the great Franco-Belgian school. His precise, elegant, dynamic line pays particular attention to silhouettes, expressions, and staging. His work on Spirou thus stands out for a skillful balance between respecting the character's visual identity and bringing his own personal interpretation, shaped notably by the influence of artists such as Yves Chaland, Hergé, and Jijé.
