Lovecraft According to Jean-Michel Nicollet

Published in 1978 in the special issue of Métal Hurlant devoted to H. P. Lovecraft, this three-page story reflects Jean-Michel Nicollet's particular affinity with the American writer's fantastical and horrific universe. A devoted fan of fantasy literature, Nicollet develops here a deeply personal vision of the Lovecraftian universe, filled with unsettling creatures, nightmarish visions, and mysterious atmospheres.

Nicollet's work stands out for its highly pictorial approach, drawing as much from illustration as from comics. His use of color, his taste for monstrous figures, and his particularly dark treatment of atmosphere give this story an almost hallucinatory dimension. This collaboration with Métal Hurlant came during a formative period of his career, as he was also producing several covers and stories for the magazine.

This is the second page of the story titled H.P.L., depicting the Devil in a city rendered in striking depth, with masterful coloring. A rare piece, from the peak of the golden age of fantasy comics.
