Remarkable Graphic Mastery

Published in 2020 by Dargaud, L'Empire is the second volume of Charlotte Impératrice, a series written by Fabien Nury and drawn by Matthieu Bonhomme. Following her marriage to Maximilian of Austria, Charlotte of Belgium finds herself at the heart of the French imperial project in Mexico. Upon their arrival in Veracruz, the couple discovers a deeply unstable country, where political ambitions, local tensions, and Maximilian's vulnerabilities will soon put their fate in peril.

In his artwork, Matthieu Bonhomme deploys an elegant, realistic style particularly suited to this historical fresco. His sense of staging, the care given to attitudes and gazes, and his highly cinematic compositions lend each sequence great narrative force. He thus succeeds in bringing together the characters' intimacy with the scope of an imperial tale.

For this exhibition, we are pleased to present this original page by Matthieu Bonhomme from the second volume of Charlotte Impératrice, a piece that reflects the artist's remarkable graphic mastery and his work on one of the great contemporary historical series.
